UBC hosted the Abbotsford RFC this past Saturday at Wolfson Fields. The Totems got off to a fast start and built a comfortable 28-10 lead by halftime. Abbotsford put some considerable pressure on the Totes and made the score 28-27 with about 15 minutes to go in the game. The Totems, made up of primarily first year players added two more tries and finished with a 40 -27 victory.
The Braves kicked of at 1:00pm and put two scores across the line in the first 20 minutes to go up by 14-0.Abby responded with a try and a penalty making it 14-10 at the half. The Braves poured in 20 more points in the second half and came away with a comfortable 34-10 victory.
The Birds faced last year's 1st division provincial champions for the last match of the day. Abby was missing a number of players who helped them carry away last year's hardware while UBC were shy of seven graduating players from last year's varsity squad. UBC started with plenty of energy and moved the ball around the field from sideline to sideline . .. Fifteen minutes in they capped off a number of offensive phases with a try in the corner from newcomer Spencer Baker. Abby started to gain momentum with a strait forth strategy by attacking from the base of the scrum, rucks and maul...a most successful strategy! They controlled the ball fo the next fifty minutes and put up three penalties to UBC's one penalty leaving the score in favor of Abbotsford 9-8. With fifteen minutes to go Abby lost a player due to a binning offense and UBC used that advantage and sent Jeff McKinnon over the line for the go ahead try. The Birds then defended a last surge from Abbotsford and finished with a 15-9 victory.
Three games, three victories, a great way to start the season.
