UBC Rugby Newsletter - February 3, 2014

On The Field

All three teams started their 2014 league schedules this past weekend as UBC was hosted by the Richmond RFC. The Totems put up a fine display of running rugby as they touched down twelve times to record an 84-10 victory. Nik Prem (Carson Graham) was welcomed back into the fold after an exchange to University of Amsterdam. Nik certainly received our stamp of approval as he crossed the line for five tries on the day. Not far behind him was scrumhalf Chris Rey who scored three tries and was good on all conversions scoring 39 points on the day. Other scores came from Captain Tim Ward, two from Terry Lok (Mc Roberts), singles from Jesse Grist (EMS) and Alex Pflaum.

It took the Braves pretty close to fifty minutes to finally wear down the opposition. A seven try performance with Ryan Singleton (Rockridge) leading the way with two tries while single scores came from Karsten Leitner (St; Georges), Cam Graham (Merritt), Spencer Soltan (Shawnigan), Ben LeSage (Alberta) and Peter Stockton (St. Georges). Connor Fuller (McRoberts) was good on four conversions and a penalty on the day and the Braves delivered a 46-10 result.

The Birds recorded a 25-11 victory over Richmond in one of our closest contests this season. The Birds came out a little flat and the strong defensive stance they displayed in the University of Victoria game seemed to sag at times. Jorden Best (Robert Bateman), Josh Schreiber (New Zealand) and Sean Ferguson all scored tries on the day while Quinton Willms (EMS) and Bryan Tyrer (McRoberts) were good for two penalties and two conversions.

Down The Road

The club was scheduled to host Bayside RFC this coming weekend but we were asked if we could reschedule our games to April 19th as Bayside was having difficulty fielding a front row due to injuries. The Totems will be active this coming weekend hosting Brit Lions at UBC, 11:30 am KO.

The Birds will head down to Berkeley on February 13th and will play the University of California in the first leg of the World Cup on Saturday February 15th at 1:00pm.

Off The Field

California

February 2014 will see the World Cup kick off in Berkeley. A small and dedicated fan base have made the trip down to San Francisco in the past years and the UBC rugby program would like to expand upon this. We invite you to come down on the 15th of February for the 1:00 pm kickoff. Our alumni and parent group will be organizing the UBC Tailgate party before and after the game. We plan on not only winning the game on the field but also putting on the best tailgate in the lot! We look forward to seeing you cheer on the Birds and soak up some California sun.

2014 Millennium Breakfast

Tuesday February 25th marks the date for the fourteenth millennium breakfast. The university will match up to $7500 of money raised which would give us $15,000 for scholarship money that could be used immediately if desired.

UBC Alumni Reunion Dinner and the World Cup Weekend

Please set aside Friday March 21st as we are going to have our alumni reunion at the Gerald McGavin Rugby Center. $75 gets you a truck load of appetizers and quality wine and beer. Can you believe that! For all you guys out of town, get back into Vancouver and make a weekend of it as Sunday, March 23rd we host Cal. KO at 1:00pm. I will be contacting alumni from various decades to spread the word and organize this event. We are looking at selling 100 tickets for this event.

Sincerely

Spence McTavish Director of UBC Rugby
