On The Field

UBC traveled to Langford, BC this past weekend to take part in a three day CIS 7’s tournament. The first day of competition the Birds played the UVic Norsemen and the Royal Military College from Ontario coming away with two victories 24-0 and 42-0. On day two we faced Western to finish off our pool play and came away with a 24-12 result. The quarter-finals for the cup took place in the afternoon where we once again met RMC and a 22-0 outcome for the blue and gold. Day three had us against Queens in the semi-finals and we put on a dazzling defensive and offensive effort to come away with a 31-0 result.

The last game, for all the marbles, was played against the Vikes from UVic and this game was quite the show. UBC went up quickly by two scores to make it 14-0. UVic countered late in the first half to make it 14-7. The second half saw UVic cross twice to make it 14-12 and 19-14 in UVic’s favor. The Birds then went the length of the field to tie it up 19-19 with less than a minute left. The Vikes struck back near the hooter and made it 24-19. The Birds had possession deep in their end but a chip and chase took the wrong bounce ending out of bounds and that was it, UVic 24 UBC 19.

Liam Murphy-Burke (Semiahmoo) was UBC’s high scorer with eight tries, 16 conversions and 72 points while Captain Sean Ferguson (Brentwood) crossed eight times. Eleven of our twelve players crossed the line during the tournament. Special thanks to Pat Fleck for all the work he has done helping the boys prepare for the tournament.

On the 15’s front the Birds and Braves were idle while the Totems won by default over Chilliwack.

Down The Road

Saturday March 15th, the Birds and Braves will be on the road again traveling up to Rayleigh Park in Kamloops. The Totems have a bye.

UBC vs Cal, Sunday March 23 at Thunderbird Stadium, 1:00pm KO

Off The Field

We are holding an Alumni Night on March 21st at the Gerald McGavin Pavilion from 6:30pm – 11:00pm. Tickets are $50. Appetizers will be served through the evening and there will be a cash bar. This will be a casual informal night, celebrating the glorious past. I have some magic for you… I hope you are not bashful, a couple of auction items, slides from the past and “no guest speaker!” Please pass the word and let’s see if we can fill the place! I have provided a link below for payment and the good thing is that you will get a $50 tax receipt pronto! More details here

FYI... there will be no tailgate party at the stadium or the rugby pavilion prior to the UBC/Cal game. There will be a beer garden at the game and alumni and friends are welcome back to the clubhouse after the match for refreshments.

Sincerely
