On The Field

Back up a week and we made our way down to Berkeley to play Cal in the first of our two game World Cup competition. Simply put the game was a war and I think we did more harm to ourselves than the opposition. Giving away two intercept tries (80 and 70m) and missing a couple of very makeable kicks put us in a hole that was too deep for us to recover. Five minutes into the second half we were down 25-5 but rallied back with three second half tries and were down 28-24 with ten minutes to go. We put them under tremendous pressure and an almost for sure try ended up in the wrong hands and Cal came away with a 33-24 result. Cal will arrive here in late March win a nice comfortable 9 point cushion and we will have to be right on our game in order to capture the cup. Make sure you go to church early on March 23rd as we need every alumni and supporter available for a 1:00pm KO at Thunderbird Stadium.

Sleigh bells ring are you listening…..yes this past Saturday we traveled to Abbotsford, a winter wonderland of snow. The Braves kicked off at 1:00pm and put in a great performance of running rugby with seven tries being scored on the day. Thomas Roche (Manitoba) was the lone forward to score while backs Spencer Loughlin (Yale Secondary), Cully Quirke (West Van) and Jun Yamakawa (Japan) added singles. Liam Murphy-Burke (Semiahmoo) recorded a hat-trick and two conversions to put up a 39-0 victory.

The Birds put in a similar performance scoring seven tries, converting four finishing the day with a 43-7 result. Alex Kam (McRoberts) and Neil Courtney (Handsworth) touch down for the forwards while Bryan Tyrer (McRoberts), Sean Ferguson (Brentwood), Francois du Toit (Vienna International School) and Erik Hunter-James (Rockridge) crossed for the backs. Bryan Tyrer was good for one conversion and Connor Fuller (McRoberts) hit three.
